Fire Woman comes alive in this high-magnification of pumice collected from a cinder cone northeast of Flagstaff, Arizona. Taken with a variable thickness birefringent quartz lens in cross-polarized light, the intense colors are a function of the crystal lattice structure of the polymer-like silicates that comprise this explosive volcanic rock.
